SPECIAL EVENT: Wednesday, September 21st. Grab a pizza, LOTS of drinks, pull up a computer and log into The Town of San Anselmo’s SPECIAL TOWN MEETING at 7PM. This will likely be a 2022 live streaming version something like small Town Hall meeting scenes in Jaws or Footloose. Everyone has an opinion, but most people don’t know that the downtown San Anselmo “Plaza” (aka Building Bridge #2 aka Creekside Commons) is a long-time failing manmade structure that blocks nearly 50% of the water flow in the creek (increasing the probability of destructive flooding in downtown San Anselmo). Conversely, The Plaza has brought new life to downtown and made a stronger community. Meeting details, how to comment before and at the meeting and link to Zoom below.

“There’s no point in acting surprised about it. All the planning charts and demolition orders have been on display at your local planning department in Alpha Centauri for 50 of your Earth years, so you’ve had plenty of time to lodge any formal complaint and it’s far too late to start making a fuss about it now.” – Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz, Commander of the Vogon Constructor Fleet

The temporary “park” on the plaza has been nice, and the order to evacuate it seems like an untimely blindsiding move, but here we are. The County drew first blood, now it’s time for the Town of San Anselmo to gather input from the community before the he-said she-said political air war starts. This Wednesday at 7PM, we will hear opinions on how great the park is and what a gem in our community.at even though the structure is failing at every wall under the bridge, due to the amount of steel and concrete, it will be the last thing standing in San Anselmo after the big 9.8 earthquake. We will hear “our seismic report is better than their seismic report.” We will hear “removing the structure will floor the Town of Ross and we’ll sue.” We will hear “If this bridge stays and the Town floods, we will sue.” We may hear many conspiracy theories from Building Bridge 2 to WTC Building 7, Climate Change isn’t happening to COVID is fake. We will hear genuine passionate and informed opinions, and we will certainly hear uniformed outcries of rage. There’s blood in the water. Let the games begin. Let’s get ready to rumble, but don’t rumble too much as we don’t want the bridge to collapse prematurely as there’s a family of skunks living on it (True; VIDEO).

All of this has happened before... This reminds me of the Larkspur train trestle… remember the old wood post train bridge made famous with Harry Callahan, Clint Eastwood, standing on it in Magnum Force (classic local scene: Click Here)… and later, the brilliant engineers said that it was also in imminent peril of collapse from structural integrity issues and people protested, and took out signs, and “save our bridge” and then this hazardous bridge was demolished…but with all the wrecking balls and demolitions available, it was so well constructed and strong, the overnight demolition took nearly a week to remove it. Sounds familiar. Anyway, once the lawyers get in the way, it’s over.

Anyway, Get informed. See our previous posts on this issues here on our News page. There are links and resources. Facts, personal opinions, trends, historical data, the voice of the community and true public safety are all fair game. You can add your voice to the Town’s forum today (see below). It’s David vs Goliath, Biblical flooding, This Wednesday’s live meeting is the first of many meetings to come, and you’re invited to be ringside, or at Creekside.

Remember, you can always forget the issues of the day with a cold beer, a great glass of wine and a good laugh here at Creekside Pizza & Taproom, putting things in perspective since 2017.

Please be courteous to our fellow citizens and appreciative to our Town Council members and Town Staff including Town Manager Dave Donery and Pubic Works Director Sean Condry. Everyone has been working overtime and scrambling to respond to the County’s choice of actions and timing on this order. Closing of the plaza here in mid September, in the middle of “Live on the Avenue” weekends and just before the rainy season was NOT on the Town’s 2022 plan. Good luck, and Thank You. – PT

From the Town of San Anselmo: “On Thursday, September 15, 2022, the Marin County Flood Control and Water Conservation District (District), owners of building and the bridge (BB #2) at 632-636 San Anselmo Avenue, locally known as the Creek Park Plaza, terminated the lease between the Town and the County for public use of the building bridge effective Friday, September 16, 2022. The District has deemed the building bridge unsafe for public use due to reports they have received showing structural deficiencies within the foundation.”On Wednesday, September 21, 2022, the Town Council will hold a special informational meeting to receive an update from staff regarding the building bridge. This will be a virtual meeting. The Zoom link is listed above. Link to Agenda Packet Page: https://sananselmo-ca.legistar.com/Calendar.aspx
